SEO Explained by Google
Many people think that Google would not support SEO as many see it as the task of manipulating search results. The simple way we look at SEO is that it is about ensuring you are communicating your website information effectively to search engines.
The following video takes a look at how to select an effective SEO analyst or company.
What does SEO do?
The term Search Engine Optimisation or SEO simply means making your website
perform better in search results
and as a result, attracting
more customers to inquire about your product or service
.
Although SEO is an art that contains many specialist areas, the key areas that optimisation would focus on include:
- Making the content on your website structured and clear to search robots (bots) - On Page Optimisation
- Show search engines like Google that you are trustworthy and an expert in your field - Off Page Optimisation
- Remove any areas in your site which make it hard for 'bots' to index your information - Technical Optimisation
- Provide information which is useful, current and that your audience would like to share - Content Strategy
Many of you may think that number 4 is self explanatory, however many businesses focus on their product rather than the need of their client. Outside of the technical SEO elements (where specialist knowledge will give you a significant boost), understanding your clients and building content that they will find useful can be the essential point of difference when looking at optimisation.
Why should I invest in SEO for my Website?
The higher your website places in search results, the more people will visit your site over your competitors. There have been numerous studies over the past 10 years stressing the importance of placement.
Below is a screen shot from Advanced Web Ranking's
live CTR tool showing the average results of their testing as of March 2017:
From this graph you can see the significant decline after the first few positions, which is why you always hear of people wanting to be "number 1 on Google". You can see this tool yourself here:

Although being 1st for the most often searched keyword is valuable, there are often many more less competitive phrases that can generate a larger volume of high profit business. These keywords are known as 'Long Tail Keywords' and make up the majority of search terms seen today (especially on mobile devices). In competitive industries an effective Wellington SEO strategy would target local suburbs in order to try dominate the local level search.
An example of a long tail keyword search phrase could be: "Fisher and Paykel Dishwasher Repairer in Miramar"
As you can see from this search phrase, it is very specific and loaded with buyer intent (desire to purchase). By combining a strong number of long tail search terms with highly placing primary terms, you can significantly increase the volume of business your website is generating for you.
White hat SEO Vs Black Hat SEO - What does it mean?
The terms White-hat and Black-hat are often used to describe SEO techniques that are perceived as clean and safe (whitehat), vs ones which are dodgy and could cause future harm. In reality there is no true line in the sand about what is right and wrong, as if the website is at the top of Google you could argue your SEO is the best SEO in New Zealand.
As a business owner it can be next to impossible to know what your SEO company is doing out there in the world wide web, which is why it is essential your SEO consultant is transparent and honest as to where your SEO investment is going each month.
We choose to view SEO as the practice of making your website content communicate well to search engines with unique quality content which is well cited around the web by trusted websites.
We will never
add your site to a link farm or paid link service and believe that the best authority is earned, not purchased.
How do I select the best Wellington SEO company?
Like with many specialist industries, it can be extremely hard to know how to select a good SEO provider. The obvious sign of a well optimised site would be their ability to appear high in the organic places for keywords such as 'Best SEO Company' and similar phrases, however this can sometimes be achieved short term by using questionable SEO tactics.
There is more to effective SEO services than simply placing first (as strange as this sounds).
A good provider will work with you to identify the best keyword search opportunities and leverage your specialist knowledge of your industry, to generate well optimised content that generates valuable traffic to your site.
Companies which simply add you to a list of directories and websites with poorly written copy and no focus on your nieche will only last so long and could potentially do just as much harm as good.
How much does SEO cost?
Prices can range significantly due to the volume of outsourced services to countries such as India. A local Wellington SEO company comes with a lot of benefits from their regional knowledge, but will typically be more expensive than some international alternatives.
Although SEO work is often priced based on the time input (hourly rate), most organisations will average this into a fixed rate based on the average time invested (plus a profit margin). The challenge with hourly pricing can be quantifying the time invested in completing actions, rather than in planning or strategy.
Most work will consist of an initial identification stage or audit, followed by a monthly retainer or implementation plan.
The initial SEO Audit of your existing site and search market is likely to cost between $1,500 - $5,000+
depending on the size of the site and number of areas investigated as part of the audit. It would be expected that as well as identifying areas of weakness, a good SEO audit would also include corrective actions or recommendations.
This will often be the area that an ongoing optimisation strategy will be based on as well as a list of additional optimisation tasks each month (such as authority/trust building).
Smaller companies as well as some larger bespoke marketing agencies may also offer hourly consulting. These rates are likely to range from $100-$300 p/Hour. Be careful if your agreement is open ended as often SEO work can become a lot more time intensive than originally expected. It is wise to come to agreement on the total maximum investment for any one job and stick to it!
